New Beginnings

I used to play golf a lot during my junior and senior years in high school some 25-26 years ago. The local golf course closed it pro shop at 4:30pm during the spring time and a group of us would be on the 1st tee at 4:45-4:50pm and play as many holes as we can get in before dark. None of us were very good but we enjoyed hitting that little white ball around. We didn't know proper golf etiquette or much of the rules, nor did we care or keep score most of the time. We just went out and had fun!

Once out of high school, away from the local course and our free golf, I found it a bit expensive to play and rarely did until recently. I started out October 2005 playing mostly at Skyway Golf Park in Chico. It's a 6-hole par-3 "executive course". I got a set of cheap set of Wilson clubs that my sister gave me from Target. Skyway Golf had an October special for all the golf you could play Monday-Thursday for the month for $40. So I got to get a lot of practice on my short game.

My wife, for Christmas that year, got me a Mega-Membership at Bidwell Park Golf Course. It's a reduced rate membership that, on weekdays, gets me $10 off on greens fees and twilight rates and hour early. About 22 rounds a year and the membership pays for itself. Well, kind of...prior to having the membership, I never thought I would even play 22 rounds a year! I think that first year, I played about 40+ rounds of golf. I'm probably on course to exceed that this year. With that many rounds of golf, you would think my scores would be better....yeah right. I think it's my wife's way of getting even with me for all the frustration I give her.

Well, now I'm playing at least once a week weather permitting and the regulars at Bidwell know me so I guess I can call myself a golfer...
